In the BioSusTex project, sustainability is not only about what we produce, but also about how we assess, measure, and decide on better alternatives. At the centre of this complex task stands GreenDecision (GD), a research-driven SME based in Venice, Italy, known for its expertise in environmental assessment, life cycle thinking, and decision support systems. GreenDecision is leading the development of the BioSusTex Decision Support System (DSS), a core project outcome that will enable transparent, criteria-based comparisons of alternative bio-based textile processes. Through the integration of environmental, economic, and social data, the DSS will help stakeholders make informed decisions that align with the principles of safe and sustainable by design (SSbD).
The BioSusTex team at GreenDecision is composed of experts combining environmental science, software engineering, life cycle thinking, and advanced analytics. At the helm is Dr. Lisa Pizzol, President and CEO, whose background in environmental risk assessment and multi-criteria decision analysis has shaped the company's mission: to provide science-based tools that support sustainable decision-making. She is joined by Alex Zabeo, CTO and co-founder, whose expertise in informatics, artificial intelligence, and geographic decision support systems underpins the technical architecture of the DSS. Together, they lead a team that includes Matteo Carisi, a full-stack developer focused on software dependability and AI applications for environmental modelling, and Arianna Livieri and Maria Rachele Sesterzi, both experts in sustainability analysis across product and process levels. This blend of competences allows GreenDecision to cover the full spectrum of sustainability evaluation, from raw data processing to stakeholder-sensitive modelling, ensuring that the solutions developed in BioSusTex are both robust and practically applicable.
One of GreenDecision’s key responsibilities in BioSusTex is to perform detailed S-LCA and LCC analyses for the bio-based textile production pathways explored by the consortium. These assessments will be central in shaping the sustainability criteria embedded in the DSS, enabling users to evaluate production scenarios from a holistic perspective. The team is also contributing to the development of an absolute sustainability assessment framework, exploring how social and economic impacts can be interpreted in absolute rather than relative terms. This shift is crucial for enabling long-term alignment with global environmental and social thresholds.
GreenDecision brings to BioSusTex a strong background in SSbD methodologies through its participation in other European projects such as SUNSHINE, SUNRISE, and BIOSAFIRE. These experiences are now informing the alignment and interoperability of the BioSusTex DSS with emerging SSbD frameworks, allowing the team to apply lessons learned and avoid duplication of efforts. Knowledge exchange with the SUNRISE project is a key component of this work. GreenDecision is ensuring synergies across projects, particularly in the area of digital decision-making tools and the integration of environmental and socio-economic performance metrics.
For GreenDecision, BioSusTex is an opportunity to deepen its expertise in sustainable textiles, an area the company sees as both urgent and full of innovation potential. The team is excited to help tackle the significant environmental and health impacts associated with textile production and end-of-life, and to do so in partnership with some of Europe’s most qualified institutions in this field.
The company’s contributions to BioSusTex are expected to enhance its software tools, expand its methodological approaches, and strengthen its position in the European SSbD and sustainability assessment community.
